In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): A Comprehensive Guide

What Is IVF and Why It Matters

Since the birth of the first IVF baby in 1978, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become one of the most effective and widely used assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in the world.

Today, IVF offers hope to individuals and couples facing a wide range of fertility challenges—as well as those proactively planning their future families.

At GP-Fertility, we combine advanced reproductive science with a global network of leading fertility centers, helping patients access personalized IVF solutions across the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, and Cyprus.

When Is IVF Recommended?

IVF may be recommended when other treatments are unsuccessful or not suitable. Common indications include:

Every IVF journey is unique. At GP-Fertility, treatment plans are fully personalized based on medical history, goals, and global treatment accessibility.

The IVF Process: Step by Step

1. Ovarian Stimulation

Hormonal medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. Patients are closely monitored through ultrasound and hormone testing to optimize timing and outcomes.

2. Egg Retrieval

A minimally invasive procedure is performed to collect mature eggs from the ovaries under ultrasound guidance.

3. Sperm Collection & Preparation

Sperm is collected and processed in the laboratory to select the highest-quality sample for fertilization. Advanced techniques may be used when necessary.

4. Fertilization (IVF or ICSI)

Eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory setting. In certain cases, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is used to directly inject a single sperm into an egg to improve fertilization rates.

5. Embryo Culture & Selection

Embryos are cultured in advanced laboratory conditions and monitored for development. The healthiest embryos are selected for transfer.

6. Embryo Transfer (Fresh or Frozen)

A selected embryo is transferred into the uterus. Many patients today benefit from Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), which allows for better timing and improved implantation conditions.

7. Pregnancy Testing & Monitoring

After transfer, a pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks later. If successful, early pregnancy is monitored before transitioning to obstetric care.

Advanced IVF Options

Eggs, sperm, and embryos can be frozen for future use, offering flexibility and long-term family planning options.

IVF Success Rates: What Influences Outcomes

IVF success depends on several key factors:

Egg quality and ovarian reserve decline with age, particularly after 35.

Understanding IVF Costs & Financial Planning

The cost of IVF can vary depending on location, treatment complexity, and additional services. Typical considerations include:

  • Initial consultations and testing
  • Medications
  • Laboratory procedures
  • Embryo freezing and storage
  • Advanced services (e.g., PGT, donor programs)

Because fertility care is often international, cost structures differ across countries. GP-Fertility provides:

  • Transparent, multi-country pricing
  • Personalized treatment packages
  • Flexible payment planning options

This allows patients to make informed financial decisions while accessing the most suitable care globally.
